This is the main band of Arioch aka Mortuus (current Marduk’s vocalist).Funeral Mist was raised back to 1993 and Deiform is the 4th full length and it was released last December.Many friends thru social media had been talking about this album as being the best Black Metal record of 2021. Listening to it several times I could say it´s of course one of the 2021 highlights. Coming from a traditional Death and Black Metal producer’s country Sweden itself shows us there are creative minds over there and they still produce worth stuff within this current time.
You’ll get very disappointed if you are looking for some Marduk or Dark Funeral generic stuff or clones. Deiform stands many steps after this and whole album presents us with the true and side B Swedish Underground Black Metal.
Let´s start talking about musical structure of this album. Twilight Of The Flesh comes as first offering of this opus.Containing almost 10 minutes song that will corrupt your soul and envolve yourself into darkness. After a shortly intro that reminds some Gregorian chants with a deep and dark atmosphere. The song develops into brutality fast riffs and agonizing vocals ,the finishing the same way the gates of hell were opened.
Apokalyptikon is much more industrial oriented with spoken and aggressive Arioch’s vocals.Yes, there are industrial elements on it and it fits the structure well. The drum machine simply does not stop here.
In Here is very disturbing and painfull,so fast like a hate train rolling. Arioch’s abuses a lot of the high speed drum samples and programs.But who care about this? When the machine takes its place where no man can go!The riffs are still fast, sometimes in Swedish Parnassus vein.
Children Of The Urn,it seems Arioch himself loves to search for internet and watch videos containing little girls’s prayers or chants.He used this formula back to Pallor Mortis song from his previous Hekatomb work,when he sampled a hilarious video from a Brazilian childish christian girl named Menina Pastora Louca (Crazy Reverend Girl).This song contains the same formula with mixing and sampling some little girls’s chants.
Hooks Of Hunger is maybe the most influenced and modern Swedish Black Metal song in this album, it´s good but no longer compared to the previous ones of this album.To not sound different maybe established Funeral Mist as resounding success on this track.
The album title Deiform probably has been chosen as the most slowly and melodic sound of this album, with a lot of solos and melodies, this songs make you travel to your subsconcious terror,it´s melodic but at the same time dark.Do not expected fast riffs or high speed drum machine here.
The last composition of this album that proves Arioch reached the top and had success . Into Ashes finishes this opus blowing your mind away and make you believe the Earth is no longer a good place to live. A utter devastation of a massive song violence.
For sure you won’t get disappointed with this album.
