Profanatica – American depravity done proper since 1990. The band was formed when Paul Ledney decided that Incantation’s aspirations for US death metal domination didn’t align with his own blasphemous vision. One band went on to be but figureheads for the Left Hand way, while Profanatica have proven to be literal champions of the Satanic black/death metal path. Only the vilest desecrations set to the most abysmal soundscapes to take in since the earliest days of USDM legend. Now, Profanatica’s latest defilement has arrived. On this day, September 22, “Crux Simplex” has been released.
I’m writing this review drunk and stoned. I figured the most sinful approach possible would be the only proper way to do this. If only I had a couple of hookers here to tantalize my Johnson at the same time… Anyway, superlatives? Few and far between. This is disgusting music to rape a nun to, and not some typical USBM bullsh~t. Forget your Gorgoroths and even your Emperors! After all, we’re American and we want big tits, fat asses and heavy bass! Well, turn it up, because that’s what you’re getting here; a nonstop bludgeoning of righteous skull matter and a perpetual deflowering of sacred hymen. All set to, you guessed it, big… fat… juicy compositions fit for gluttony and gout. Take tracks like “Condemned to Unholy Death” and “Take Up the Cross” like shots of straight bourbon and relish in the gut-warming ecstasy of the sweetest poison.
Profanatica have always done it right. It’s as if the entirety of the USDM and the USBM scenes can’t fathom the simplest fundamentals. It’s not something complicated, never has been. With Profanatica, it’s just heavy, brutal and wretched – the kind of stuff visualized by artists like Trey Azagthoth, Glen Benton and John McEntee, but never properly realized. No one gives a shit about your classically-inspired, uber-technical, “I wanna blow Chuck Schuldiner” death metal, or your Scandinavian-inspired BM. We want “Cunts of Jerusalem” and “Division of Robes” in all of their scene-admonishing glory. Just what you’ve been looking for all these years. I think this might actually be death metal the way it was originally intended, just beneath the surface of the mainstream and Satanic/blasphemous to the core.
Shit man, still conscious despite the booze and dick somewhat chubbed here. Profafuckingnatica! That’s literally all I got…
